MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD, also known as Lymphatic drainage massage) is a gentle form of massage that is used to improve the flow of lymph fluid through the body. Lymph fluid is a clear, colourless fluid that helps to remove waste products and toxins from the tissues. When the lymphatic system is not functioning properly, lymph fluid can build up, causing swelling (edema).

MLD is a specific technique that uses light, rhythmic strokes to move lymph fluid through the body. The therapist will use their hands to apply gentle pressure to the skin, following the path of the lymph nodes.

MLD can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Lymphedema;
  • Breast cancer-related lymphedema;
  • Cellulitis;
  • Edema after surgery;
  • Swollen ankles;
  • Sinus congestion;
  • Headaches;
  • Fibromyalgia;
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome.

FAQs

Is lymphatic massage like a traditional massage?

Not quite. Lymphatic massage is very different from the traditional massage you may have experienced. It uses gentle, rhythmic movements rather than deep or firm massage techniques. No massage oil is used, allowing the therapist to work with the skin directly and perform the specific movements needed for lymphatic massage.

How much pressure is used during lymphatic massage?

The pressure is very light and gentle. Lymphatic massage works close to the surface of the skin, so it does not require the firm pressure often associated with other types of massage. The movements are slow, rhythmic and soothing, making the treatment a relaxing experience.

What should I wear for my lymphatic massage?

For the treatment, it is typical to undress to your underwear so your therapist can work effectively over the areas being treated. If you feel comfortable, you may also remove your bra. You will always be appropriately covered with towels, with only the area being treated exposed at any time. Your comfort, privacy and dignity are always respected.

What can I expect during a lymphatic massage?

Your therapist will use light, rhythmic movements across the body, following the pathways of the lymphatic system. The treatment is generally gentle and relaxing, and many clients find the slow, flowing movements very calming.

How often should I have a lymphatic massage?

The ideal frequency depends on your individual needs and what you are hoping to achieve from your treatments. Some clients choose lymphatic massage as an occasional wellbeing treatment, while others prefer a regular treatment plan. Your therapist can discuss what may be most appropriate for you.
