MUMMY MOT®

A Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries.

After pregnancy, up to half of mothers’ experience weakness in their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and up to a third still have a tummy gap after eight weeks. This can lead to women developing pelvic pain or back pain, problems with their bladder or bowel and/or sexual dysfunction. These conditions are not something you should simply live with because you have had a baby.

It is recommended that women have an initial assessment after their 8-week GP check, but Mummy MOT practitioners also treat women who gave birth years ago.

Mums lead active lives and need to bend, squat, lift and carry! As part of the Mummy MOT® individually tailored postnatal care and functional exercises are provided.

A Mummy MOT® consultation includes:

  • A full postural screen
  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment
  • Abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation
  • Screening for bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction

Follow up treatment includes:

  • Education and advice on activities such as lifting your baby or pushing a buggy.
  • A bespoke rehabilitation programme with your goals and lifestyle factors in mind.
  • A written report of the findings of your assessment.

WHAT TO EXPECT

An initial assessment may last up to 75 minutes. A thorough case history will be taken which involves listening to your experience and any concerns in detail, taking your relevant medical history (including any current medication), followed by a physical examination. An explanation of findings and the number of further appointments needed will always be discussed.

  • The provision of pelvic floor exercises and deep abdominal strengthening to assist in graded retraining of the pelvic floor muscles and abdominals
